The Technique

What Is Transcendental Meditation?

An effortless, evidence-based technique for deep rest, clarity, and inner peace — practiced by millions worldwide.

The Transcendental Meditation technique — often simply called TM — is a simple, natural practice taken from the ancient Vedic tradition of India. It's practiced for 20 minutes, twice a day, sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. There is no concentration, no contemplation, no effort of any kind.

How TM Works

During TM, the mind settles inward beyond ordinary thinking, allowing it to experience the silent source of thought — a state of restful alertness called Transcendental Consciousness. The body, in turn, gains a profoundly deep level of rest — measured to be much deeper than ordinary sleep. This unique state is the foundation of TM's wide-ranging benefits.

"You don't try to clear the mind, control the breath, or achieve any particular state. You simply learn the technique — and then it does itself."

What Makes TM Different

  • It's effortless. Unlike mindfulness or concentration techniques, TM doesn't require focus, control, or willpower.
  • It's natural. The mind naturally settles inward when given the right technique — no force is needed.
  • It's universal. TM involves no religion, philosophy, or change in lifestyle. People of all faiths and backgrounds practice it.
  • It's individually taught. TM is learned one-on-one with a certified teacher who provides a personal mantra and personalized instruction.

The Science Behind TM

The Transcendental Meditation technique has been the subject of more than 380 peer-reviewed scientific studies, conducted at over 200 universities and research institutions in 30+ countries. It's now one of the most thoroughly researched meditation techniques in the world.

Documented Benefits Include:

  • Significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Lower blood pressure (TM is included in U.S. National Heart Association guidelines)
  • Improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia
  • Enhanced focus, clarity, and creativity
  • Greater emotional resilience and inner calm
  • Reduced symptoms of PTSD and burnout
